This course is intended to provide deck officers and management-level engine officers with guidance and information on the ballast water system, ballasting and deballasting procedure to control the trim, list, draught, stability and stresses of the ship.

Upon completion of the course, trainees will be able to:

• Identify design limitations imposed on ship’s operability
• Identify onboard manuals and instrument that guides ship officer in operating ship within her permissible stress limit
• Describe working principles of every component in the ballast/bilge system
• Describe different activities in the pre-cargo/ballast operation stages
• Describe measures for synchronizing cargo operation with ballast operation
• Demonstrate ability in controlling cargo/ballast operation through simulation
• Implement the plan’s ballasting sequence through simulation.
